Being a co-founder is something I’ve never done before.

I mean, I’ve founded, launched, and relaunched many brands in my adult life, but I've never really, really felt the weight and the FREEDOM of being my own boss while doing so.

I also keep thinking about something Chef Marcela Valladolid said to me on Episode 6, almost in passing: that when she finally decided to leave the Food Network after fifteen years, after the Emmy nomination, the cookbooks and the version of Mexican cooking she had translated for an American audience that didn’t always know what to do with her accent or her abuela’s recipes, the network told her that if she walked away, she wasn’t coming back. And she said, without missing a beat, that she wasn’t negotiating, that she was DONE.

So much chaos and calmness in one statement, right?

Chef Marcela and I have that in common. And I know, in a way, too! There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from spending fifteen years being excellent inside a structure that is not yours, no matter how good you get at it. I think most of us in midlife know that exhaustion intimately, even if our version of it never involved a television studio. We built the department. We carried the client relationships. We trained the people and mentored while being mentored. We became indispensable to something that, by design, was never going to be ours.

And we called that LOYALTY for a long time because, well, we had it so good.

For so many of us, leaving is envisioned as a rebellion or a reinvention story with a tidy arc. But the truth is, it’s messy. Really, really messy. Y OJO, eso no tiene nada de malo. But it also can be seen as an opportunity to finally own our sh**t in the best way possible. That sense of wanting to be the architect of our own thing instead of the face of someone else’s, and the distinction matters more than it might seem to on the surface.

Ana and I built Her Wisdom Era with that kind of energy. We call it the perfect mix between what happens when you are Done With the Hustle, and you embrace that life is more fun for Las Imperfectas.

For Chef Marcela, it was a bit more serendipitous. The brand she built when she decided to go for ownership, Matriarca, came from a tattoo she had on her hand for years before it became a company. The word had simply mattered to her and told the story about the women in her own family and the presence she had grown up surrounded by.

And it gets better! Nobody owned the domain; it was sitting there waiting for her the whole time. Clearly, this was more a recognition than an invention.

The thing had already been hers. She just had to open up the space (mentally and emotionally) for it to show up. And the exact same thing happened to us with HWE.

What Really, Really Matters

I’m obsessed with processes. Not so much with results. Mainly because I’ve been surrounded by so many “success stories” that feel performative and unsustainable for my artistic brain to even fathom.

In that, I’ve noticed that the part that gets lost when we talk about reinvention is as if it’s about courage alone. Courage matters, and Marcela, Ana, and I surely have plenty of it, but what she actually described to me sounded less like a leap and more like an uncovering. The three of us spent two decades building trust with a community that showed up for our brands, our clients, our content, and stayed for something less easy to name, the sense of being let in, of watching a Latina create, ¡ATREVERSE! without apologizing for any of it.

Of course, this doesn’t always translate into the kind of success metrics love. But there’s no better feeling than the freedom that comes from knowing you’ve built a community that didn’t need to be convinced. That kind of immediate, almost unreasonable trust doesn’t come from a launch strategy. It comes from twenty years of experience.

Or what we call COLLECTIVE WISDOM.

I now think about ownership differently because we tend to talk about it in midlife as something financial, a business we start, a house we finally put our own name on, equity in something with our title attached to it. And we love abundance, don’t get me wrong.

But the ownership we are talking about here is the one that only happens the moment we stop asking for permission to be fully aligned with our purpose.

There is also a particular grief in this stage of life that I don’t think we talk about honestly enough: the grief of realizing how much of our best work went toward building something we will never own a piece of.

I have felt it myself, looking back over twenty years in corporate media, at the magazines I helped shape, the covers I fought for, and the audiences I grew. The goal is not to erase that grief but to sit with it in the most honest way, to listen to what it has to say.

That’s when the magic happens.

Marcela is 47. She started Matriarca last year, surfing in the mornings, alcohol-free, raising her kids, and building a direct-to-consumer brand from the ground up at an age the industry she used to work in would have written her off without a second thought.

Ana is 53, about to send her daughter to college in the UK, and ready for her next chapter now that she has decided to move back home to El Salvador. I’m 47, mothering my 8-year-old girl, writing, editing, working through my grief one creative project at a time.

Do we have our sh**t together all the time? HELL NO. Are we proud of our messy processes? F**K YEAH. Because they got us here. So we own them.

After eight episodes of some of the most extraordinary Latinas in this country naming themselves out loud, both of us were still processing. So we called , a water healer, writer, and one of the women who has been holding Ana through the last three years of her life, to help us hold all of it.

Water healing, in case it’s new to you, is the somatic practice Rocío guides in warm water, where your body is literally held and supported until it can soften and release what words cannot reach. Her work sits where ancestral wisdom and the body meet.

This is what we call La Terapia, the final episode of every season, where we sit with someone who can help us metabolize everything the season surfaced. And Rocío handed us the language for what this season has been.

In this episode, she teaches through the chrysalis. That stage inside the cocoon where the caterpillar’s tissues dissolve into pure liquid before anything resembling a butterfly takes shape. From the outside, it looks like nothing is happening. Silence. Stillness. Like something is lost.

If something in your life has been pulling you under and you cannot yet see what's on the other side, sit with that for a second.

What Rocío is naming, and what every guest this season has named a su manera, is that the collapse is not the outcome. It is the middle of a messy process most of us were never taught to recognize, let alone stay in. Rocío reminds us that the imaginal cells, the ones holding the shape of who you are becoming, are protected through the whole dissolution. Nothing about this stage is erasing you. It is revealing what was already there.

That is what midlife is asking of you. To trust that the stillness that feels uncomfortable and like nothing is happening is doing the deepest work of your life.

Rocío also talks about something we suspect will land hard for a lot of you, because it did for us. The descent is not optional. She calls it tocar fondo, an archetypal journey that shows up in every indigenous tradition around the world, the place we all have to go to figure out what is ours and what was handed to us by generations before.

So much of the healing conversation right now is about focusing on what was broken, and Rocío is not dismissing that work. She is adding to it. The resilience your grandmother built, the way your mother figured out how to keep going, the parts of your lineage that carried love forward even when everything else was scarce, those are the imaginal cells you are working with. Your blueprint was never only trauma. It was also wisdom. Your work now is remembering which is which.

We asked Rocío how midlife has shown up for her, and she said sovereignty. When we asked her what she had stopped apologizing for, she answered in one unapologetic word.

Dr. Mariel Buqué was a little girl walking over a mile with her abuela to collect water in the Dominican Republic when she first felt what she would spend her career giving language to. She just knew her grandmother’s world, which carried a ton of weight, love, and a sense of scarcity woven through everything. But it wasn’t until she became a Columbia-trained psychologist sitting across from patients who carried the same unnameable heaviness that she understood: the pain she had witnessed hadn’t started with her grandmother either.

In this episode, Ana and Cristy sit down with Dra. Mariel, Afro-Dominican holistic psychologist and author of Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma, one of the most important voices reshaping how we understand mental health in communities of color. She is, by her own joyful account, 40 years old, engaged, living in a multigenerational home with her parents, her sister, co-parenting her nephew, and a garden she tends with the devotion of someone who finally understands what it means to be rooted.

Dr. Mariel starts where other practitioners often don’t: the body. She offers an image that’s hard to shake once you’ve heard it: “You were once a microscopic cell inside your mother’s reproductive organs as she was a five-month embryo inside your grandmother, three generations sharing one body, absorbing the same sensations, the same stress hormones, the same fear. When the world felt unsafe for one of you, all of you learned it. The body adapted. And you were born already primed. What this means for those of us in midlife who are finally old enough to look back at what was handed to us is both a reckoning and a profound relief. Because you have to face the patterns until you feel a sense of relief, because those patterns are not your fault and they are not your destiny.”

She defines her own wisdom era as reinvention and returning to the simple things before the pressure to always be on took over. For her, reinventing herself meant becoming exactly who she wants to be. The guidance, she says, has always been there. Silence is just how we finally hear it.

This one is for every woman who is only now beginning to understand where her patterns came from and why they have followed her for so long, because she was born with wisdom too, right alongside everything else that was passed down. The work of this season of life is finally learning to hear it. And to heal it!

Marcela Valladolid spent 15 years building a culinary brand inside a kitchen everyone dreamed of but someone else owned. She’s published six cookbooks: Fresh Mexico, Mexican Made Easy, Casa Marcela, Familia, Cocinando on Cook Street, Fiestas at Casa Marcela. She became the face Latinas saw on the Food Network when very few of us were visible anywhere on television. She smiled, she cooked, she represented us gracefully. And she did it so well that most people watching never suspected how much it was costing her.

Then she walked away.

Food Network called her back, incredulous. The message was clear: if you leave, you are not coming back. Marcela’s answer was equally clear: I’m well aware. This isn’t a negotiation. I’m done.

In this episode, Ana and Cristy sit down with the Mexican author, television host, entrepreneur, surfer, sober woman, and founder of Matriarca, the incredibly successful direct-to-consumer food brand she launched at 47 that celebrates the ancestral wisdom of the women who came before her with clean Mexican ingredients. Today, we went live on Substack for the very first time alongside , the founder of and author of The State of Midlife — the first research report of its kind on women in this stage of life. And what came out of that half hour was exactly what this community is built for: real data, real talk, and the feeling that you are not, in fact, going crazy.

Or that at least, you are not going crazy alone.

The conversation went deep into Ali’s research methodology, which is worth understanding because it changes how you read the data. She combined over 200 first-person essays submitted to Forty Fifty, five years of U.S. Google search trends, and more than 2,400 AI query responses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google to build a picture of what women in midlife are actually asking and what they are actually getting back. The gap between those two things is the whole story.

Mónica Ramírez is the daughter and granddaughter of migrant farmworkers from Fremont, Ohio, where she still lives. She became a civil rights attorney, founded Justice for Migrant Women, co-founded Alianza Nacional de Campesinas and Poderistas, and, at 25, created the first legal project in this country focused on sexual harassment against farmworker women. In November of 2017, she wrote a letter on behalf of 700,000 farmworker women to the women of Hollywood, a letter Time Magazine published, a letter that helped ignite the Time’s Up movement. And while the world watched that movement grow louder and louder, the women who wrote the original letter stayed in the fields. Mónica has spent the years since making sure their names, their lives, and their dignity stay in the conversation. And now, at 49, she is pursuing her PhD.

In this episode, Ana and Cristy sit down with one of the most powerful, grounded, and generous women in the Latina movement to talk about what it means to carry both a calling and a wound, to fight for justice while still learning to give yourself grace.

Mónica shares the deeply personal story behind her life’s work: her sister, her own experience as a survivor, and how she learned to never forget where she came from.

Las latinas llegamos a la menopausia dos años antes que la media nacional y, aun así, casi nadie habla de esto en nuestras comunidades. ¡Nosotras no teníamos ni idea!

En este episodio, Cristy Marrero y Ana Flores hablan con Gaby Natale, de menopausia.com, sobre todo lo que nuestras madres y abuelas se callaron durante su midlife.
