Marcela Valladolid spent 15 years building a culinary brand inside a kitchen everyone dreamed of but someone else owned. She’s published six cookbooks: Fresh Mexico, Mexican Made Easy, Casa Marcela, Familia, Cocinando on Cook Street, Fiestas at Casa Marcela. She became the face Latinas saw on the Food Network when very few of us were visible anywhere on television. She smiled, she cooked, she represented us gracefully. And she did it so well that most people watching never suspected how much it was costing her.

Then she walked away.

Food Network called her back, incredulous. The message was clear: if you leave, you are not coming back. Marcela’s answer was equally clear: I’m well aware. This isn’t a negotiation. I’m done.

In this episode, Ana and Cristy sit down with the Mexican author, television host, entrepreneur, surfer, sober woman, and founder of Matriarca, the incredibly successful direct-to-consumer food brand she launched at 47 that celebrates the ancestral wisdom of the women who came before her with clean Mexican ingredients. The gap between those two things is the whole story.

Mónica Ramírez is the daughter and granddaughter of migrant farmworkers from Fremont, Ohio, where she still lives. She became a civil rights attorney, founded Justice for Migrant Women, co-founded Alianza Nacional de Campesinas and Poderistas, and, at 25, created the first legal project in this country focused on sexual harassment against farmworker women. In November of 2017, she wrote a letter on behalf of 700,000 farmworker women to the women of Hollywood, a letter Time Magazine published, a letter that helped ignite the Time’s Up movement. And while the world watched that movement grow louder and louder, the women who wrote the original letter stayed in the fields. Mónica has spent the years since making sure their names, their lives, and their dignity stay in the conversation. And now, at 49, she is pursuing her PhD.

In this episode, Ana and Cristy sit down with one of the most powerful, grounded, and generous women in the Latina movement to talk about what it means to carry both a calling and a wound, to fight for justice while still learning to give yourself grace.

Mónica shares the deeply personal story behind her life’s work: her sister, her own experience as a survivor, and how she learned to never forget where she came from.

She talks about the Dolores Huerta revelation, what it felt like to witness a hero and an amiga she has loved since she was 20 finally break her silence, and the immense pain and responsibility she felt in that moment.

I still remember the first time I knew I could be a writer. I was 14 or 15, and my Spanish teacher had us read an entire novel for each test, with ONE question to fill up a small libreta. Her very well-justified obsession with Luis Rafael Sánchez had me wanting to tell stories as if there were no mañana. Those small notebooks she gave us became my vessel of wisdom.

One thing led to another, and that inquisitive teenager turned out to be a media executive, sometimes a la fuerza. Twenty years, many reinventions (Substack version of Las Imperfectas included), plenty of insecurities, and yes, adult bullying. But hey. no regrets here, conste.

So when I heard Gaby Moreno (our fabulous Episode 4 guest, ICYMI) talk about carrying a teenage dream for over 30 years, I felt seen. Resulta que she was 13 when she visited New York with her family and knew in her bones what her calling was, walking out of a Broadway theater: that was the stage she needed to be on. She carried that dream all the way home to Guatemala. Decades passed. Nine albums, a Grammy, and two Latin Grammys as an independent artist who never needed a stadium to prove she mattered. And then, at 44, her manager forwarded an email asking if she was available to play Persephone in Hadestown on Broadway. Her first thought? “My manager has lost his s**t.”

Well, it was legit. She said yes before she fully understood what she was agreeing to: eight shows a week, moving to New York alone, her husband and dog staying in Los Angeles, learning a principal role in a Tony Award-winning musical, having never done Broadway before. A principiante all over again, at the height of a career the world had already recognized as her identity.

Knowing who we want to be is a never-ending task. I knew it at 14. Gaby knew it at 13. But it took us both 30-something years to understand what that calling actually felt and looked like, and what to do when it needed to change, because we did too.

We’ve been trained, in both explicit and unspoken ways, to believe that midlife is a time for consolidation, not experimentation. You protect the credibility you’ve earned. You wear your label(s) carefully. Because you’ve f***ing earned them. But that label doesn’t determine your next step. It serves only as a prompt to nurture your intuition and red-flag the road ahead.

For Gaby, being a beginner again was “liberating” once she allowed herself to be open to it. She had to release the image she’d been carrying and curating for years, and in doing so, she remembered something she’d somehow forgotten: growth doesn’t have a ceiling, and there is something genuinely profound about allowing yourself to not know.

Nobody Puts Ambition in the Corner

When Ana brought up the word ambition, Gaby didn’t reach for scale, market share, or visibility. She talked about growing inward, deepening toward herself and toward a definition of success that finally includes her as a person, not just as a product.

She was honest that this isn’t the ambition that gets celebrated. What Gaby described as choosing a 400-seat theater over a stadium is a form of ambition that rarely gets called by its name. But it is absolutely ambition: the audacious, clear-eyed kind.

I could write a book about the ways I’ve excluded myself from my own ambition, mostly out of fear of seeming like I had an inflated ego. What I learned from our conversation is that including yourself is not a smaller ambition. It’s a harder one. We create for others, perform for others, build for others, so fluently that we forget to ask what any of it costs us or whether we’re actually in it alongside everyone else. And I know Ana has a few things to say about this, too (shameless plug: Done With the Hustle, bestselling book coming soon!).

Gaby, in her 44th year on a Broadway stage she first imagined at 13, had figured out how to stay in it. That’s a form of wisdom that doesn’t arrive until you’ve lived enough to recognize it. Echando a perder, included.

The Moment of Yes

“I didn’t have to audition!”

Yet, Gaby wasn’t performing I-have-my-shit-together. The internal struggle was real, the fear was real. But the fear didn’t get the deciding vote. The 13-year-old girl who walked out of that theater did.

We begin every episode of Her Wisdom Era with a flashback, wanting to understand what that younger version of our guests was like, because we believe she’s still in there, informing everything.

Gaby walked onto the Walter Kerr stage in midlife, carrying thirty years of a dream she never let go of, completely and unapologetically herself.

Whatever your Broadway is: the business, the degree, the book, the relationship, the city, the creative project engavetado, the version of yourself you’ve been afraid to be too loudly. Remember: there is no expiration date.

A dream you write down in your journal, tuck into a Spanish test notebook, and keep alive through nine albums, two Grammy ceremonies, and decades of building something extraordinary on your own terms, that dream doesn’t expire. It waits.

And when the email arrives, you say yes. F**K YES, baby girl.

Todavía recuerdo la primera vez que supe que podía ser escritora. Tenía 14 o 15 años, y mi maestra de español nos hacía leer una novela completa por cada examen, con UNA sola pregunta para llenar una pequeña libreta. Su obsesión, más que justificada, por Luis Rafael Sánchez me dejó con unas ganas enormes de contar historias estilo fin-de-mundo. Esas libretas se convirtieron en mi primer recipiente de sabiduría.

Una cosa llevó a la otra, y esa adolescente curiosa y preguntona terminó siendo ejecutiva de medios, a veces “a la fuerza”. Fast-forward: han sido veinte años, muchas reinvenciones (incluida la versión de Substack de Las Imperfectas), inseguridades de sobra y hasta adult bullying.

Pero sin arrepentimientos, conste.

Así que, cuando escuché a Gaby Moreno, nuestra fabulosa invitada del Episodio 4, hablar de cargar con un sueño adolescente durante más de 30 años, me sentí profundamente seen. Saber quiénes queremos ser es una tarea que nunca termina. Yo lo supe a los 14. Gaby lo supo a los 13. Pero a las dos nos tomó más de 30 años entender cómo se sentía y cómo se veía ese llamado de verdad. Y qué hacer cuando necesitábamos cambiarlo, porque nosotras también habíamos cambiado.

Nos han entrenado, de formas explícitas e implícitas, para creer que el midlife es un momento de consolidar, no de experimentar. Proteges la credibilidad que te has ganado. Usas tus títulos y etiquetas con cuidado porque te las has f***ing ganado. Pero ese branding no determina tu próximo paso; solo sirve como punto de partida para nutrir tu intuición y detectar las red flags en el camino.

Para Gaby, volver a ser principiante fue “liberador” una vez que se permitió estar abierta a eso. Tuvo que soltar la imagen que había construido y curado durante años y, al hacerlo, recordó algo que de alguna manera había olvidado: el crecimiento no tiene techo y hay algo genuinamente profundo en permitirte no saber.

Señora Ambición

Cuando Ana sacó la palabra ambición durante la entrevista, Gaby no fue a buscar cifras, ni data del market share. Habló de crecer hacia adentro, de profundizar en sí misma y de una definición de éxito que por fin la incluye como persona, no solo como producto. Como brand.

Fue honesta al decir que esta no es la ambición que se suele celebrar. Lo que Gaby describió, elegir un teatro de 400 butacas sobre un estadio, es una forma de ambición que rara vez recibe ese nombre. Pero es ambición de la mejor: más audaz y la que va con los ojos bien abiertos.

Podría escribir un libro sobre las formas en que me he excluido de mi propia ambición, en su mayoría por miedo a parecer que tenía el ego inflado. Lo que aprendí de esta conversación es que incluirte a ti misma no es una ambición mala; es una más difícil. Creamos para otros, actuamos para complacer a otros, construimos para otros, con tanta fluidez que olvidamos preguntarnos qué nos cuesta todo eso o si de verdad estamos somos parte del corillo. Las latinas llegamos a la menopausia dos años antes que la media nacional y, aun así, casi nadie habla de esto en nuestras comunidades. ¡Nosotras no teníamos ni idea!

En este episodio, Cristy Marrero y Ana Flores hablan con Gaby Natale, de menopausia.com, sobre todo lo que nuestras madres y abuelas se callaron durante su midlife.

Gaby es periodista independiente, ganadora de tres premios Emmy. Sobrevivió al cáncer de seno y entró en la menopausia inducida médicamente a los 46 años, justo en medio de su mejor año profesional. Al buscar información en español, encontró casi nada. Por eso creó menopausia.com, la primera plataforma digital bilingüe dedicada a la educación y la comunidad sobre esta etapa para mujeres latinas.

María Hinojosa was the first Latina hired at NPR. She built a media empire from scratch in Harlem. She won a Pulitzer Prize. And now, she’s at the peak of Her Wisdom Era and ready to show us what she’s made of.
